Hot Lab #9 Review
Last Saturday was the 9th Hot Lab with Danny Day (from the NAG Game.Dev forum) presenting Networking Needs, a talk about 3 important elements to keep in mind when building networking games.
Danny brings a cool, relaxed, professional attitude to the Hot Labs and his experience in game development was evident in the case studies he presented to illustrate his points.
It was also nice to see some faces from the sagamedev community!
The slide deck for Hot Lab #9 is available from my blog; unfortunately the games are not so easily available, the original sites for them being lost to Google’s cache server (but TigerMonkey is available on LanGames).
We also got Danny to present an impromptu overview of Game Maker at Microsoft (where we were chowing free pizza and drinks) to the sagamedev guys and a bunch of people from the SA Developer .NET Juniors talk. He showed off some of the coolest games made with Game Maker from the NAG Game.Dev competitions and some collaborative games he was involved in.
Danny is really fired up about the Hot Labs and I hope this means we’ll see more talks from him.
P.S. Danny never did tell us how TigerMonkey got named but after quizzing him he said it comes from when he asked his friends to close their eyes and say the first thing that they saw when they opened them again. I don’t know what the Monkey was doing at the time or what alcohol was flowing (knowing them probably very little) but it must have been a goooood party.
