Going to LAN at rAge 2006

Someone please remind me to visit Computicket this weekend to pickup my ticket to rAge this weekend. That’s right; besides a free pass to the floor to help out with the Microsoft stands as an SA Developer member and the Game.Dev sessions I’ve bought myself a ticket to attend the 1000 man LAN which I’ll join in the evenings. It’s going to be 3 days away from home surrounded by the latest technologies and unwashed fan boys.

While some of you might baulk at the thought, I’m actually looking forward to it. I haven’t done something like this since my early roleplaying days and the distraction will be a welcome one.

My 2 concerns are my PCs security from script kiddies and hygiene; I have a plan though for my PC and for hygiene I’ve suggested to the organizers that they take everyone outside in the early morning and get the fire brigade to use high-pressure hoses on them.

For my PC I have a few simple things I’m gonna do: get the latest updates from Microsoft and virus protection (I’m using avast!); Change my password to a key combination instead of words to prevent dictionary attacks; turn off IIS and SQL (my PC is also my dev box) and lastly clean out my Microsoft firewall of used openings. I’m also sure there are some good free tools out there to up the security on my box and I’ll let you know about them as I find them.

See you at rAge!
